Description
Macro photo of a 'Black Bat Plant' (Tacca chantrieri), which is actually an orchid. A most unusual plant introduced from parts of Malaysia, India, and East Asia, which grows from a large beautiful green foliage and favors shady, moist environments.
The main attraction of the plant is the strange, unique, purple-black flowers. The flowers superficially resemble a bat in flight with long whiskers. They can grow up to 12 inches across, and the long 'whiskers' can grow up to 28 inches.
Also know as the Cat's Whiskers or Devil Flower. Taken in the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Gardens in Hilo, Hawaii.

Sue, just want to congratulate you on your "Artist of the Week". This orchid captured my mind and heart and I've never seen an orchid such as this one. So unique in color, it's amazing. And your presentation of it, excellent. You are a wonderful photographer and artist and I'm very happy to have you in our group Exquisite Florals.
