Artist's Description

Macro photo of a 'Black Bat Plant' (Tacca chantrieri), which is actually an orchid. A most unusual plant introduced from parts of Malaysia, India, and East Asia, which grows from a large beautiful green foliage and favors shady, moist environments.

The main attraction of the plant is the strange, unique, purple-black flowers. The flowers superficially resemble a bat in flight with long whiskers. They can grow up to 12 inches across, and the long 'whiskers' can grow up to 28 inches.

Also know as the Cat's Whiskers or Devil Flower. Taken in the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Gardens in Hilo, Hawaii.

About Sue Melvin

Sue Melvin

Photography is my passion! I enjoy capturing and sharing the world around me as seen through the lens of my camera. My primary interest centers around the beauty of nature with my main subjects being flowers, birds, animals, butterflies and sunsets. I find many opportunities to photograph the natural world through my love of bird watching and visiting botanical gardens. Over my lifetime I have lived and traveled (and continue to travel) to many parts of the world and enjoy sharing those cultural experiences with others through my photography. In addition, I use various digital techniques to create painterly photographic art, Out of Bounds (OOB) 3D art illusions, and colorful abstracts from my own photographs. Your time spent...
