Description
Female muscovy duck resting in the shade under a tree. Loose white feathers are strewn around the pine needles on the ground. Muscovy ducks are large, heavy ducks with short legs and broad tails and wings. Muscovies are native to South America, their original name was 'Musco duck,' because they ate so many mosquitos. Mature drakes (males) are much larger than the females. Both sexes have what is known as a red 'caruncle' on their head. Photo taken in Charlotte, NC.
